This morning I was almost faced with a head on collision with a car who was trying to overtake a cyclist going in the same direction. I was in the bike lane on Affolternstrasse heading in the signaled direction (northeast). At the same time a bike was in the car road heading southwest. The car behind the cyclist was impatient and tried to overtake. In order to overtake he entered the bike lane and I was almost hit. The entire street width is only 4.5m and many people bike along this to access the train station bike parking for commuting. This is one of the busiest stations in Zurich so why are cars able to come so close? There are pedestrians, busses and bikes trying to get around so can we make more space prioritized for them or at least forbid cars to overtake when there is no space here? Can this become a bike only section of the street and force cars to cut through the other area (see image). If not, can there be a NO OVERTAKING sign and can we keep this entire area T20 so that there is more protection for vulnerable users and better communication between road users (time to look in eyes and communicate when there is confusion)? There are no reported crashes in this area on Unfallmelder, but I can tell you that when that car came straight for me, I was shaking for the next 10 minutes. A normal cyclist with such a near miss would potentially stop biking.
